April 28: Alfaparf Milano Celebrates World Day for Safety and Health at Work

On occasion of the World Day for Safety and Health at Work, Alfaparf Milano wants to underscore the importance of communication in the company through a short story, “The Triple Filter Test”:
“In ancient Greece, Socrates had a great reputation for wisdom. One day someone came to the great philosopher and said to him: “Do you know what I just heard about your friend?”
“One moment,” responded Socrates, “before you tell me, I’d like you to take the triple filter test.”
“Triple filter?”
“Yes,” said Socrates. “Before talking about someone else, you should take the time to filter what you want to say. I call it the triple filter test. The FIRST filter is the TRUTH. Are you certain that what you’re going to tell me is TRUE?”
“No … I just heard people talking about it.”
“Excellent. So you don’t know if it’s the truth. Let’s go on to the SECOND filter, GOODNESS. Is what you’re going to tell me about my friend GOOD?”
“Ah no, on the contrary!”
“So,” continued Socrates, “you want to tell me bad things about him and you’re not even sure if they’re true. Maybe you can still pass the test. The THIRD filter is USEFULNESS. Is it USEFUL for me to know what this friend did?”
“Actually, no.”
“So,” concluded Socrates, “if what you wanted to tell me is neither true, nor good, nor useful, I prefer not to know it, and I suggest that you forget it.”

This story allows us to examine what’s truly important in communication, that is ACTIVE Communication, a fundamental element for promoting Health and Safety at Work. We want the Group’s ACTIVE Communication to initiate change, so that it can help us address the truly dangerous situations we face every day, and to be clear, transparent, simple and direct, to enrich and improve our company culture. In addition, since experience shows us that it’s the employees who work at the company every day who offer the most useful suggestions for improving health and safety at work, we want the Group’s ACTIVE Communication to provide information, suggestions and direct experiences.

ACTIVE Communication is the tool for promulgating safe behavior in our workplace environments, where each of us, in any role, is a safety leader and promotes it everywhere by guaranteeing everyone’s well-being. Sustainable Development Goal 3 of the United Nations includes the key words: health and well-being. In addition to the 17 existing goals, the Alfaparf Milano shares one more, goal 18: a culture of safety in order to reduce fatal workplace accidents by 50% by 2030.

A culture of safety and behavior aimed at promoting and protecting that culture everywhere at the workplace is a distinctive trait of Alfaparf Milano people, and it’s one of the characteristics that distinguishes us from the others. Our ACTIVE Communication aims at growing the culture of health, safety and prevention throughout the company organization and to firmly entrench the message that “taking care of yourself and others comes before anything else, and that doing so is everyone’s right and responsibility.”

Today an ACTIVE Communication Health and Safety pilot project was launched in Italy; new videos and infographics were prepared that presented company values in creative, appealing messages and gave all employees the chance to talk about their direct experiences. A quarterly magazine on the issues of Health, Safety and the Environment was also created.

The path to cultural change in the area of health, safety and the environment has been forged. Now it’s up to us to keep it safe and accessible to everyone, so that each of us can follow it properly. Thank you!
